Coimbatore: Banned tobacco products worth 2 lakh were seized from a mini lorry at CTC Medu on Pollachi-Coimbatore road.
A mini lorry was parked unattended at CTC medu on the Pollachi-Coimbatore road. Upon seeing loaded sacks on the vehicle, locals informed the police. Following this, the Mahalingapuram police rushed to the spot and inspected the vehicle. The sacks were found to contain banned tobacco and pan masala products.
Department of Food safety officials were then alerted. They arrived at the scene and seized 140 kg of banned tobacco products worth Rs 2 lakh. They are actively investigating as to who could have smuggled the banned tobacco products in the vehicle bearing Kerala registration number, parked it on the roadside and fled.
