2,000 EB contract workers go on strike in Chennai demanding a minimum salary of Rs. 380 per day

Chennai: On behalf of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board Contract Workers' Union, about 2,000 persons went on strike at the Electricity Board headquarters in Chennai today with various demands including a salary of Rs 380 and that their jobs be made permanent.


Chennai: On behalf of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board Contract Workers' Union, about 2,000 persons went on strike at the Electricity Board headquarters in Chennai today with various demands including a salary of Rs 380 and that their jobs be made permanent.

Their other demands included that they must be approved to continue working in EB and issued with identity cards. Their main demand is that they should be paid the minimum wage of Rs. 380 per day as announced by the Minister for Energy.

Commenting on the protest, State Secretary of the union Nagaraj said, "Since 1998, around 2,000 of us have been working on a contract basis at all divisional offices in the Coimbatore Zone.

In the event of natural disasters such as storms and floods, 8,000 contract workers across Tamil Nadu are being sent for all electrical work such as repairing power poles, but no officer has come forward to identify us and make our jobs permanent. We should be paid the minimum wage of Rs. 380 per day as announced by the Minister for Energy."
