'Priceless Wet Grinder Distribution scheme' which was announced and implemented by former Chief Minister Minister of Tamilnadu late J. Jayalalitha helped the wet grinder manufacturing industry a lot. A total of 1 crore 86 lakh wet grinders were purchased under this scheme. After the scheme was over, the grinder industry started to witness a lull. Tax of 28% levied under the GST scheme pushed the entire sector to crisis. After various representations made by the industry associations, the tax rate under GST was initially reduced to 12% and later to 5%.
Post 'Covid-19' virus outbreak in India, the change in the mindset amid many people to avoid hotel food and readymade idli-dosa batter has helped the wet grinder manufacturing industry witness a steady growth.
Coimbatore Wet Grinder and Spares, Accessories Manufacturers' Association (COWMA) Cluster Services President, Sastha M Raja said, "Post 'Covid-19' virus outbreak, many people hesitate to purchase food products including readymade idli-dosa batter. This change in the mindset has helped the wet grinder manufacturing industry witness a steady growth across the district."
He added, "There are many varieties of grinders such as multigrain grinders to cater to the different tastes and preferences of the people. At present only 5% tax rate is levied under the GST scheme, which has helped the wet grinder industry."
