Coimbatore: The world is facing humanity’s biggest crisis -- the Coronavirus pandemic. Not just social distancing and wearing masks, the 'New Normals' are ruling the world.With every industry, function and geography affected, the health care industry is facing the biggest manpower crisis, ever.

Not just Covid patients, the doctors and hospitals are striving hard to cater best health care for other ailing patients, as well. While the private hospitals have to tackle a few hundreds of such patients, the influx of thousands of patients on any given day poses huge challenge tothe public health care.

Round-the-clock ambulances rushing towards the emergency ramps and stretchers hurtling across with blood stains, doctors reviving motionless patients at the ER pathway is a common sight that happens every 10-15 mins at government hospitals, across India. Definitely not the place for the faint-hearted, such is the scene at Coimbatore hospital.

Adding one more feather to its cap, the pediatric department of Coimbatore GH have performed life-saving surgeries for 25 children including newborn.According to Dr. N Venkatesh Mohan, Chief, Department of Paediatric Surgery, 25 critical neo-natal and pediatric cases were successfully treated during this pandemic at Coimbatore GH.

He briefed that 10 were cases of newborn emergencies, children born with various congenital anomalies like oesophageal atresia (block in the food pipe), bowel atresia (block in the intestinal passage), anorectal anomalies (absence of anal orifice by birth) and abdominal wall defects etc.



Dr. N Venkatesh Mohan added that nearly 30% of the critical cases were newborns. State-of-the-art emergency surgical procedures were performed with positive outcomes. Many of these newborns needed assisted ventilatory support for respiration by means of ventilators and temperature control by incubators, etc.

Speaking of the neo-natal unit at the Coimbatore GH, Dr. Mohan said its one of the best centres with round-the-clock critical care using modern equipments.

"Not just new borns, we deal with children between 1 month to 12 years with various surgical emergencies like appendicitis, liver abscess, accidental foreign body impaction and ingestion, hot water spillage causing burns etc. With Covid around us, our team take utmost precaution while treating them by wearing PPE kits and other safety norms. All children are subjected to COVID testing, as well," Dr Venkatesh Mohan told in a recent press meet.



He said that most of the critical cases treated during these recent pandemic times have been discharged, while a remaining few are recuperating well and are in postoperative recovery phase. Concerted efforts by Anesthesia, Paediatric Medicine Department and support staff have helped the unit save the lives of 25 children, amid these challenging days, Dr. Venkatesan Mohan told.
