Coimbatore: At the Farmers grievance meeting held on behalf of the District Administration through video conferencing, farmers expressed fear that the reformed laws in Farm bill 2020 will end state-run markets and government procurement at minimum support prices.

Due to the pandemic situation, the farmers ’grievance meeting held every month at the District Collectorate was suspended. Meanwhile, the district administration decided to hold the meeting through video conferencing to enable the farmers register their grievances.

Extensive arrangements were made at the respective Regional Agricultural Extension Centers for the farmers to submit their demands online. Many farmers registered and participated in various Regional Agricultural Extension Centers including SS Kulam, Perur, Sulur, Thondamuthur, Karamadai, Suthalpet, Anaimalai and registered their condemnation against the Farm bill 2020.

Speaking at the meet, Tamil Nadu Farmers Association District President Su. Palanisamy told, three farm reform laws passed by Parliament last month, will yield no benefit to the farming community. He questioned why the government did not consult with the farmers or seek their opinion before passing the bill.

Commenting on the Noyyal rejuvenation project kick-started at Rs. 230 crore, he reminded that the project includes rejuvenation of 30 water bodies in the region, as well. To ensure fair implementation of the project, a monitoring committee headed by the District Collector should be set up. The committee should include farmers, revenue officials and public servants, he added.

He pointed that the shortage of land surveyors in Tamil Nadu, and how farmers and general public are affected due to this. He stressed that steps should be taken to fill the posts, in war footing.

Farmers should be informed in advance about the camp to be held in connection with the drip irrigation subsidy, he said He also alleged that farmers are made to run pillar to post when they approach government offices regarding subsidy or to inquire welfare schemes.

More than 100 farmers from various places in the district took part in the meeting and expressed their grievances.
