Coimbatore: Shanmugam (21) hails from Puliakulam area of Coimbatore. He had been to jail in a murder case and released later.
While in jail, he got acquainted with Amarnath (21) of Ganapathy in Coimbatore and Vallarasu of Madurai who were arrested for selling cannabis.
Meanwhile, Shanmugam befriended a 13-year-old girl through Instagram. Two days ago, the girl went missing following which her parents lodged a complaint at Podanur police station.
Based on this, the police conducted an investigation and after receiving information that the missing girl was in the Puliakulam area, went there and rescued the girl. Subsequently, investigation revealed that Shanmugam's friends Amarnath, Vallarasu and a woman had helped Shanmugam abduct the girl.
Following this, the police, who registered a case under the POCSO Act on charges including kidnapping and sexual harassment of the minor girl, arrested the three and produced them before a judge and remanded them in custody. Police are also searching for the woman who was an accomplice to the kidnapping.
