Coimbatore: Banana prices have gone up in Pollachi Gandhi market as Ayudha Puja and Saraswathi Puja approach.

Bananas are brought in from the surrounding villages and other districts including Thoothukudi, Trichy and Karur and the banana auction is held on certain days of the week in one part of the market.
It is bought by local traders and Kerala traders at a fixed price. The recent Southwest monsoon affected the banana harvest slightly and thus, the supply to the market was low for a few weeks from the start of last month. As the weather has turned hot, the number of locals visiting the market has increased and Saraswati Puja and Ayutha Puja are approaching, all types of bananas are being sold at higher prices.

Red banana was auctioned from Rs 800 to a maximum of Rs 1350. Morris was auctioned for a maximum of Rs.700, Poovan for Rs.800, Karpuravalli for Rs.700, Rasthali for Rs.650 and Kerala Rasthali for Rs.45 per kg. Traders said there will be a special auction on the day before Saraswathi Puja.
