Coimbatore: As part of the Police Commemoration Day which is observed on October 21 every year to remember and honour the brave policemen who have laid down their lives in the line of duty, the police force attached to the Coimbatore City, Coimbatore District (Rural), paid salutes to the policemen who lost their lives while on duty in Coimbatore.

The day traces its history back to 21 October 1959, where 20 Indian soldiers were attacked by Chinese troops in Ladakh during an altercation between the troops. 10 Indian policemen lost their lives and seven were imprisoned.

As part of this, at a memorial event held at the Coimbatore Police Training School Grounds in honor of the sacrifices of the policemen who lost their lives in the line of duty in Coimbatore.

Police Commissioner Sumit Sharan, Inspector General of Police (West Zone) K. Periaiah, , Deputy Inspector General Of Police (DIG) of Coimbatore range, Narendra Nair,bDistrict Superintendent of Police Arularasu, Deputy Commisaioner (Law & Order) Stalin, Deputy Commissioner (Crime) Uma and others laid wreaths at the martyrs’ column at the PRS grounds. 72 guns hits were fired in the air in their honour.

In 1985 in Coimbatore, Constable Rajaratnam who worked at the Singanallur Police Station was brutally murdered by a thug named Rowdy Babu. Upon orders of Police Commissioner, Assistant Commissioner (East) Eeswaran, Singanallur Inspector Rajkumar, Sub-Inspector Arjun Kumar, visited Rajaratnam's house today to honor his service. They met his wife Santammala and family and expressed their respect and grief.
