Coimbatore: In 2017, the incident of breaking two ATM machines and looting money in Peelamedu and Thaneerpanthal areas caused a great shock in Coimbatore. Following complaints lodged by the concerned bank officials, three cases were registered at the Peelamedu Police Station and a special investigation was carried out.

In this case, the convicts from North India were sentenced today in the Coimbatore Criminal Court. City Commissioner Sumit Charan and Deputy Commissioner (Crimes) Uma commended the cops who expedited the case and got the culprits punished.

The accused in the case are Islamuddin (45), Haryana, Mustaq (32), Uttar Pradesh, Zulfikar (25), New Delhi, Mosam Khan (34), Rajasthan, Zubair (19), Rajasthan, Amit Kumar (25), Haryana, Zubair (32), Rajasthan, Mubarak (30), Rajasthan, Amin (35), Haryana. The case was held in court for the past three years. Under the circumstances, Judicial Magistrate Gnanasambandam passed a verdict on the case against Zulfikar, Mosamkhan, Zubair, Amitkumar and Amin on 19.10.2020.
The convicts were sentenced to 3 years' rigorous imprisonment under section 120 (8) for conspiracy and a fine of Rs.10,000 and 6 months' rigorous imprisonment for failure to pay the fine.
They were also sentenced to 3 years' imprisonment under sections 457 and 380 IPC for trespassing into an ATM room at night with criminal intent and stealing money and a fine of Rs. 10,000 / - and 6 months' imprisonment for failure to pay the fine. It was mentioned that both these sentences should be treated separately.
Zubair was sentenced to 2 years' rigorous imprisonment under Section 25 (1-8) (3) of the Arms Act and fined Rs.5000. Failure to pay the fine is punishable by 3 months' imprisonment. The trial of Islamuddin and Mushtaq is ongoing in court.
Similarly, in the case of attempting to break into another ATM and rob money, the aforementioned accused were sentenced to 2 years' rigorous imprisonment under 120 (8), 457, 511 and a fine of Rs.1000. was imposed. Failure to pay the fine is punishable by 3 months' imprisonment.
