According to traders, onion production in the northern states, including Maharashtra, has been severely affected by the continuous rains, which has reduced the supply of onions to Tamil Nadu.
Due to the depletion of stock of onion in Tamil Nadu, shallots go for Rs. 60 to Rs. 100 per kg and large onions Rs. 70 to 80. As in the past, the government can bring down onion prices only if it imports onions, traders said.
