Coimbatore: Pollachi potters hope that people will worship Ganesha idols at their homes for Ganesh Chathurthi.

For the past four months, the lockdown has severely affected the livelihoods of potters, who are now suffering further as the production of the Ganesha idols ahead of Ganesh Chathurthi has gone down. Pottery workers are losing out by not being able to export a wide variety of pottery, including earthenware, pots, to other districts and states.

In this situation, it is questionable whether this year's Ganesha Chaturthi festival will be held as usual due to the coronavirus pandemic across the country as they can make profits only during the festival season. Therefore, Pollachi potters workers are interested in making small idols that can be kept at home, instead of making large clay idols.

This year as orders for Ganesha idols have not come in large quantities, they are making small idols for worship at homes. They are making clay statues in the hope that people would buy small statues for their homes.

Depending on the shape and size of the statues, statues ranging from Rs. 100 to 2000 are prepared for sale in Pollachi. For the past two months, due to the curfew, special events, temple festivals, etc. have not taken place.
