Coimbatore: A sweet shop that proclaimed their herbal mysorepak could cure COVID-19 in a single day has been sealed. The shop’s license has been cancelled too.
Sriram who runs Nellai Lala Sweets in the Thottipalayam area distributed pamphlets claiming that the herbal mysorepak sold in his store could cure COVID-19 infections in a single day.
The news spread like wildfire on social media and most TV channels and newspapers covered their story with this unscientific claim. After being alerted by many concerned citizens, officials from FSSAI and Health and Siddha Medicine departments raided the sweet shop in Thottipalayam.
During the inspection they found that, without approval, Sriram had been using 18 ingredients to prepare the mysorepak that he claimed can cure COVID 19. They ascertained he had been advertising this impossible, false claim just to make profits during these pandemic times.
The officials then confiscated the sweets and the 18 herbal ingredients used in its making. They informed Sriram that the shop would be sealed.
Speaking about this, the Coimbatore District FSSAI officer Tamilselvan said, "We will initiate action against Sriram for spreading false information. He did not obtain approval for the manufacture and the sale of herbal mysorepak. The license of the shop has been cancelled and the Siddha Department officials have confiscated the mysorepak and its ingredients for testing. A complaint has been lodged against Sriram at the police station and action will be taken."
The Siddha Medicine Department official Dhanam said, "It was done with an intent to deceive the gullible during these times of pandemic. The shop owner is not even aware of the names of the herbs used. He did not obtain a permit from the Siddha Medicine department to manufacture the sweets. Action will be taken after the results of the tests arrive.”
