It has become a frequent practice to smuggle hawala money and gold from TN to Kerala via Walayar, Coimbatore. Despite heavy police presence, this crime keeps happening on a regular basis. When police are tipped, they make arrests based on information they receive and initiate action against the perpetrators.
Each day, many vehicles ply between both the states carrying essential goods and these are inspected thoroughly by police on both sides of the border.
On one such routine inspection today, two smugglers were caught red handed for trying to smuggle ₹1.25 crores of hawala money.
Following this, Abdul Salaam and Mithun Kunju of Kerala have been arrested by Kerala police. Palakkad police conducted investigations and filed cases on the criminals following which they were taken to court.
An inquest is underway.
