Coimbatore: An overspeeding Tipper lorry carrying sand killed a 70-year-old man in a hit-and-run accident.
Palanisamy (70) resides near the Mangarai check post in Coimbatore District. He lives with his wife Marammal. Six months ago, he started working as a cashier at a bakery in the Periya Thadagam Pirivu area.
Palanisamy who left for work at 6 AM this morning, on his two wheeler, met with an accident when a tipper loaded with sand for brick kilns collided with his two wheeler. He died on the spot. Palanisamy's younger son's friend who witnessed the accident informed that a tipper with the name TKT NPK caused the hit-and-run accident.
Following this, Palanisamy's son lodged a complaint with the Chinna Thadagam Nanjundapuram Police station. Based on the complaint, the police started an enquiry and traced the owner of the lorry who initially feigned ignorance and claimed that his lorry had nothing to do with the accident. However, he later relented.
Following this, a case was filed and Palanisamy's mortal remains were sent for post mortem. Investigation is pending in this matter.
Palanisamy's son alleged, "The driver of the tipper was a 16-year-old boy. Despite the ban on sand mining in the area, a lot of sand is still smuggled. The boy had been speeding the lorry, which has caused the death of my father. My father's death is a sad example for the plight of the motorists who traverse the dangerous roads in the area."
