Blood donors stranded at containment zones in Coimbatore request a safe alternative to donate blood; coordinators petition District Collector

Coimbatore: Co-ordinators of blood donors petitioned the District Collector to permit blood donors from the containments for blood donation. They also requested to conduct PCR tests for the donors.

Coimbatore: Co-ordinators of blood donors petitioned the District Collector to permit blood donors from the containments for blood donation. They also requested to conduct PCR tests for the donors.

Patients from Coimbatore, Tirupur, Nilgiris and Erode districts are under treatment at the Coimbatore Government Medical College Hospital and various private hospitals. More than 50 volunteers and donors coordinate to provide blood to these patients. However, they have been hesitant to come to the Government Hospital to donate blood due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since many college students and people working at various organisations have returned to their native lands due to the COVID-19 lockdown, the number of donors has gone down significantly. Therefore, coordinators who streamline the blood donors have requested for collection of blood at a Primary Health Center near the Government Hospital or other community halls.

Nearly 10 areas in Coimbatore including Singanallur, Peelamedu, Selvapuram, Kuniyamuthur, Podanur, Gandhipark and other places have been declared as COVID-19 prevalent zones and have been contained. More than 10 blood donors who arrived from these areas to donate blood at the Government Hospital have been turned down by the doctors and sent away. This caused the blood donors to go away without providing the help that they could.

It should be noted that the blood donors who donate blood are being tested for COVID-19 before they can donate blood. With many blood donors coming from the containment zones, it has been requested that the District Collector initiate action to enforce COVID-19 testing for them and permit them to donate blood if they test negative. A petition to this effect was filed with the District Collector.
