Coimbatore: In order to equip them to better monitor day-to-day affairs, traffic police officials in Coimbatore have been ordered to wear body-worn cameras.
These will be used not just to capture traffic violations and instances of crime but also to record their daily activities and transmit the same to the control room in realtime.
Traffic police personnel in Coimbatore have now joined the ranks of police departments in other parts of the country such as Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra and Delhi where body cameras are being used to ensure effective policing.
As a visual record of their actions will be maintained, police personnel who abuse their power and ask for bribes from motorists will become a thing of the past. On top of that, the use of these cameras will deter instances of attacks on police personnel by violators.
At a time the police are under close scrutiny and are being vehemently criticised in the backdrop of Sathankulam custodial deaths, the move to use bodycams implemented by the city commissioner Sumith Sharan is a welcome one.
Top police officials opine this will help avoid unnecessary skirmishes between police and motorists.
