A total of 16 lakh people have benefitted from food provided by the Amma Unavagams during the lockdown - Minister S.P. Velumani

Coimbatore: Nearly 16 lakh people have benefitted from the Amma Unavagams during the COVID-19 lockdown period, informed the Minister for Municipal Administration S.P. Velumani.


Coimbatore: Nearly 16 lakh people have benefitted from the Amma Unavagams during the COVID-19 lockdown period, informed the Minister for Municipal Administration S.P. Velumani.

"The Amma Unavagams did an exemplary job in wiping away the hunger of the poor and needy during the COVID-19 lockdown in Coimbatore. The COVID-19 patients at the ESI are also being offered scrumptious food and snacks", he informed.

Elaborating on this he said, "The poor and needy are well fed by the Amma Unavagams during the lockdown. There has been a substantial increase in the number of visitors to the the Amma Unavagams. Hence to feed the increasing number of visitors, the eateries have been directed to increase the quantity of food that is being prepared."

"There are 12 Amma Unavagams within the limits of Coimbatore Corporation and three in the municipalities nearby. Each of them have been provided with vessels worth Rs.2 lakhs. The 12 Amma Unavagams in the Coimbatore Corporation have provided food to 9,90,113 people and the three Amma Unavagams in the Municipality areas have catered to 2,52,272 people.

Around 4 lakh people have been provided with egg. The expenses of Rs.94.83 lakhs were provided by the AIADMK Coimbatore Suburban and Metropolitan District Council. Cash amount of Rs.86.19 lakhs was paid to the District Collector upfront on June 1, 2020. The remaining amount will be paid soon", he informed.

The Minister also informed that the patients at the ESI hospital are being provided with immunity-boosting food on a regular basis. All the food provided to the patients are made hygienically and are of good quality.

He also elaborated on the food being provided to the patients at the ESI hospital. "COVID-19 patients are provided with milk or rice porridge at 6.30 AM as per choice, kabasura kudineer at 8 AM, and pongal, idli, oothappam, upma, onion uthappam, poori/ roti/ idiyappam (any two varieties), coconut chutney, tomato chutney, sambar, chickpeas masala at 8.30 AM. At 10 AM, they are provided with vitamin C drink, banana, sweet lime and at 10.30 AM they are provided Lemon Ginger juice, health mix porridge/At 12 PM they are provided with pepper rasam and at 1 PM they are provided a lunch consisting of rice, sambar, rasam, vegetable or tomato rice/ coconut rice, ghee rice with vegetable (any one) and curd rice and a boiled egg.

At 4 PM, they are provided with tea/bournvita/vegetable soup and chickpeas. At 8 PM they are provided with chapati/dosa/kichadi/roti (any one), vegetable kuruma, chutney, and sambar. Children are provided with milk, rice porridge and biscuit per demand."

"Other than breakfast, lunch and dinner, all other food varieties and drinks are prepared at the ESI hospital's modernised kitchen in a hygienic manner. This food is provided to the patients, doctors, nurses and other workers", informed the Minister.
