Coimbatore: A male elephant that had fallen ill and was undergoing treatment in the Sirumugai forest area passed away today. The elephant has been under treatment since June 28, 2020.

A wild elephant was spotted near the Pethikuttai Bhavani Sagar water catchment area in the Sirumugai forest range near Mettupalayam on June 28. It had taken ill in the Mayilmokkai area. On receiving information regarding this, the Forest department rushed to the aid of the elephant. When the forest department workers spotted the elephant, it appeared to be ill and tired. This information was immediately relayed to the veterinary medical team.
A medical team led by Dr. Sugumar from Coimbatore reached the Sirumugai forest and offered treatment to the elephant. They gave glucose and immune booster tablets to the elephant. Subsequently, the elephant recovered a little and was able to get up and walk back into the forest. The elephant was being monitored continuously.
Eventually, the elephant fell sick again and fell down near Pethikuttai. It was being offered treatment for the past six days. However, the elephant failed to respond to treatment and died.
The series of deaths of elephants in the Sirumugai forest area due to ill health has become a cause of worry. It has also raised concerns regarding the ecosystem of the forest.
