Coimbatore occupies the third place in the farming of bananas in TN. Bananas are cultivated in large quantities at Thondamuthur, Perur, Karamadai, Thudiyalur and Pannimadai in the District. The banana bunches are brought to the banana mandi's at R.S. Puram for sale.
With the COVID lockdown still in place in the state and functions such as marriages severely downsized as part of Coronavirus preventive measures, the need for bananas has drastically come down. With surplus arrivals of bananas to the R.S. Puram mandi and the diminished need for them, the prices of bananas have fallen steeply.
Speaking about this, banana traders said, "On a normal day eight to 10 tonnes of bananas arrive at the R.S. Puram Market. Of this, four tonnes will be transported to Chennai. However, now due to the complete lockdown in Chennai, the export of bananas has been affected completely. With this being the case, the daily arrival of bananas has been 15 tonnes. Due to this, the price of bananas have fallen."
They added, "Last week, the sevvazhai variety sold for Rs.45 per kilo; however now the price is Rs.40 per kilo. Green bananas (Morris) sold for Rs.14 a kilo are being sold at Rs.10 a kilo and the price of nendran banana has gone down from Rs. 40/kg to Rs.32-34."
