TN rushes toward grim milestone of 1,00,000 as record single-day spike breaches the 4,000 mark; death toll crosses 1,300

A mammoth total of 4,343 fresh coronavirus cases were reported in Tamil Nadu on Thursday swiftly pushing the total number of cases toward the grim milestone of 1,00,000. The overall tally in the state stands at 98,392 today.

In what continues to be an unrestrained run, Tamil Nadu added its biggest single-day spike so far of positive Covid-19 cases, today, while the state continues with second-highest coronavirus cases in the country.

The death toll also soared to 1,321 after 57 more virus-related fatalities were reported in the state in the last 24 hours.

Chennai continues to be at the helm so far as the daily numbers of positives go with 2,027 new cases today as a result of which the overall count in the city leapt to 62,598.

Along with Chennai, Chengalpattu, Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram, many other districts across the state displayed high numbers with districts including Madurai, Salem, Tirunelveli, Trichy, Thiruvannamalai, Vellore, Theni, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram, Dindigul and Kanyakumarai being the major contributing clusters.

The Western districts of Nilgiris and Tirupur registered 8 and 6 new cases today. As well, the Nilgiris witnessed its first COVID death.

While active cases in the state have reached 41,047, the number of patients who have recovered from coronavirus stands at 52,926. The recoveries also include 3,095 new ones from today.

According to the State Health Department, 33,488 samples were tested today and over 12.3 lakh samples have been subjected to PCR tests since the outbreak of the virus.

Meanwhile, according to the Central Ministry of Health & Family Welfare Tamil Nadu is one of the 12 Indian states that have been witnessing the highest number of patients recovering from coronavirus. Tamil Nadu stands third on the list with 56,021 absolute recoveries.
