Coimbatore: A Coimbatore GH doctor has invented a new device to disinfect face masks, gloves and stethoscopes that healthcare personnel use.

The Coimbatore Government Hospital offers treatment to patients not just from Coimbatore, but from the nearby Tirupur, Nilgiris and Erode districts as well. The spread of COVID-19 has caused fear regarding the spread of the virus from objects used on other patients. Similarly reuse of N-95 masks, stethoscopes, mobile phones and penshas also caused confusion in the minds of doctors themselves. N-95 masks which are considered to be the safest are not readily easily available to the doctors and are a bit pricey too.

Dr. Panneerselvam of the Department of Social Medicine of the Government Medical College Hospital has designed a new device to solve these problems. He has designed a large thermocol box lined with aluminium foil paper that can be filled with ultraviolet rays that help with the disinfection process.

This device can be used to disinfect used N-95 masks, stethoscopes, mobile phones and other reused objects. The UV rays used in the device can remove the germs on the objects in less than five minutes. N-95 masks that have been disinfected in this manner can be reused at least five times, say the designer of the device.

This new device was handed over to the Coimbatore Government Medical College Hospital Dean, Dr. Kalidas. The dean and the fellow doctors expressed their appreciation to Dr. Panneerselvam. The Minister for Municipal Administration S.P. Velumani also shared this invention on social media in praise of Dr. Panneerselvam.
