The Nilgiris: Lorry driver attempts self immolation in Gudalur as the police who stopped him allegedly scolded him.

Lorry driver Thiyagaraja (52) of Gudalur was driving his lorry near the MGR Nagar in Gudalur around 6.30 PM yesterday. He was driving the lorry via the Nandhatti area towards Gudalur. The lorry collided with an auto and caused an accident. Following this, a fight broke out between Thiyagaraja and the auto driver.

The residents of the area informed the police regarding this and SI Mani Durai arrived at the location and conducted an enquiry regarding the accident. During enquiry, the lorry driver who went to the lorry to retrieve the documents came out with a can of kerosene and poured it on himself and tried to immolate himself.

People in the vicinity rescued him and admitted him to the Gudalur Government hospital where he was diagnosed with 45% burns.

He was transferred to the Coimbatore Government Hospital for further treatment.

The police led by the Gudalur DSP are investigating the incident. The Gudalur RTO Rajkumar also conducted an enquiry into the incident.

Lorry drivers informed that Thiyagaraja said SI Manidurai badmouthed him following which he tried to burn himself. They also said that the police abusing lorry drivers and penalising them unnecessarily are common occurrences in the area. While the lockdown has caused a shortage of income for the lorry drivers thereby causing a lot of difficulties, they tend totake such drastic decisions, they said. They also requested the police to temper their rigid behaviour.

The police have informed that the lorry driver was in an inebriated condition and had caused the accident. When the SI asked the driver to furnish his documents, he unexpectedly set himself on fire.

While the case of custodial deaths in Thoothukudi is raging in TN, the self immolation of the lorry driver in Gudalur due to police chiding him has caused a stir.
