Coimbatore: DMK MLA N.Karthik has requested the District Collector to arrange more hospitals for COVID-19 patients. He said the prevalence of coronavirus in the district of Coimbatore is increasing and more than 50 people are diagnosed with the disease every day. He added that if the number of tests is increased, the number of victims will also increase. He opined that in the current situation, about 5 thousand people must be tested every day.

He said the prevalence of coronavirus in the district of Coimbatore is increasing and more than 50 people are diagnosed with the disease every day. He added that if the number of tests is increased, the number of victims will also increase. He opined that in the current situation, about 5 thousand people must be tested every day.
ESI hospital in Varadharajapuram is the only treatment center with about 500 beds. With a total of almost 500 positive, the hospital is likely to be filled with patients within a week, said the MLA.
He said patients who come for treatment, will have to be admitted to the Government Hospital in Coimbatore which also seems to have very few beds, but exposing GH patients with other diseases to the virus could be very dangerous, so there is a compelling need to establish a separate ward for treatment of coronavirus disease and to improve treatment facilities.
He added that although private hospitals provide treatment for COVID-19, the poor cannot afford it and many do not accept THE government insurance cards.He also added that the health department has not made any public announcement on the public health insurance cards and the health department has not come forward to help victims to use them.
He recommended that a special ward can be prepared at the Coimbatore Medical College Complex for treating the sick and ventilators can be obtained from private hospitals. He suggested that non-residential areas or college buildings can be used to isolate people with illness.
He added that areas around ESI hospital are under high risk and requested the health officials to disinfect the area regularly and protect the people in the area from the virus.
