Prabhu (25) belongs to Udumalai, Tirupur district. He joined the police force in 2018 and is currently deputed at the Kangayam Police station. He was on check post duty yesterday night near the Thittuparai area.
During duty, the Thittuparai check post received information from the Noyyal check post regarding a speeding container lorry that had not stopped at the Noyyal check post. The lorry had apparently rammed into the barricades and had sped away. Following this information, the Thittuparai check post police were alert and ready to seize the vehicle.
The speeding lorry, however, did not stop at the Thittuparai check post too. Prabhu, who was on duty at the check post, got on his bike and chased the lorry in an attempt to stop it. Unfortunately, Prabhu's bike was hit by the container lorry and he was thrown off the bike. He sustained grievous head injuries and died on the spot.
The lorry driver in the meantime drove the lorry in an alternate route towards Erode. However, the Kangayam police patrol vehicle chased the lorry and caught it at the Odanilai area in Erode.
On enquiry, it was revealed that the driver's name was Bhaskaran (40) and he belonged to Ramanathapuram. Further he had driven the lorry in an inebriated condition.
The Kangayam police arrested the lorry driver and investigations are on.
