Coimbatore: In a suo moto cognizance, the State human rights commission has sought explantion from the Coimbatore City Police Commissioner based on news reports and subsequent video of cops involved in beating up a 16-year-old minor boy.

The order states that the City Commissioner, Sumit Sharan should send a detailed report on the issue within two weeks of receiving the notice, through post.

"Failing to do so, the Commission may proceed to take such action, as it deems fit and proper", the notice informed.

Citing the recent incident at Rathinapuri in Coimbatore district, where sub-inspector Chellamani and few other cops during a patrol picked up an argument  with a woman running a pavement food stall, demanding her to close shop. The heated argument turned into a tussle and the minor boy of the woman took the bike key of the cop to show his anger against the behaviour of the cop towards his parents.

Irked by the incident, SI Chellamani got down from the vehicle and began to beat up the minor and threatened to put the boy in jail. Another cop was seen, beating him with a lathi. The public who witnessed the incident have asked the cops to stop beating a minor, as it was against law.

As the video of the incident went viral in social media, several people and activists questioned on how a police could deal a minor in such a way..?

Following the Sathankulam incident where a father and son lost their lives to alleged police brutality, the State human rights commission has taken this issue in Coimbatore as suo moto and sought explanation.
