Chennai: The government of Tamil Nadu has extended the protracted lockdown in the state till the end of July. This comes after the State witnessed the highest ever single-day spike in cases with 3,949 persons testing positive today. However, newer restrictions and relaxations have been announced for the extended statewide lockdown.
The ongoing intense lockdown in Chennai, its neighbouring districts and Madurai has also been ordered to be extended till July 5.
As a new addition to restrictions, there will be a state-wide total lockdown on all Sundays in the month of July. Also, inter-district public transportation has been suspended till July 15.
The statement from the government added that all essential services including groceries, meat, fish and egg sellers across the state would be allowed to operate with certain restrictions.
While e-passes obtained in areas where intense lockdown has been enforced will be valid till June 30, no new ones will be issued, said the state government.
Earlier, a medical experts' committee recommended to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami that there was no need to implement a lockdown in the state.
The expert committee also advised the state government that restricting public transportation, wearing masks, social distancing, and hand hygiene will help in breaking the chain of causation of the viral infection.
