COVID-19: Another high single-day spike of 3,949 in TN; overall tally of positives rushes past 86,000

As the state witnessed a mammoth total of 3,949 COVID positives today, the highest ever since the onset of the pandemic in Tamil Nadu, the overall state count darted across the 86,000 mark and stands today at 86,224.

Coimbatore: As the state witnessed another high total of 3,949 COVID positives today, the highest ever since the onset of the pandemic in Tamil Nadu, the overall state count darted across the 86,000 mark and stands today at 86,224.

Even as the pandemic virus keeps overpowering the previous records, measures are being undertaken on a war footing to curb the spread.

Alarmingly, single-day COVID death tolls have started picking pace too. The deadly virus claimed 62 more lives today (18 and 44 deaths in private and government hospitals, respectively)

Out of the 3,949 positives today, Chennai registered a whopping 2,167 pushing the state capital's overall tally to 51,699. The neighbouring districts of Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur continue to sport high numbers too.

Elsewhere in the state, districts including Madurai, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Villupuram, Thiruvarur, Thoothukudi, Ranipet, Salem, Sivagangai, Coimbatore Nagapattinam, Krishnagiri, and Dindigul, among others, have started witnessing more positives.

Coimbatore and its neighbours are in the reckoning again with a significantly higher number of surges recorded over the past few days. While Coimbatore registered 65 new positives today, The Nilgiris and Tirupur recorded 14 and 10 new cases, respectively. With the overall tally for Coimbatore surging to 528, counts in Tirupur and the Nilgiris have risen to 84 and 160, respectively.

The state managed to discharge 2,212 patients on Saturday, taking the total number of recoveries to 47,749.
