Madurai: In an alltime high, a total of 300 persons have tested positive for COVID-19 so far today in Madurai on Sunday as a result of which the overall tally of positives has gone past the 2,000 mark in the city.

With this, Madurai climbed to the fourth position among the 37 districts in terms of the highest number of cases.

With this upward trend going steady over the past few days, the district administration and health officials continue to make arrangements for additional beds to handle patients.

Although Government Rajaji Hospital has 2,000 COVID ready beds, including 375 with oxygen and 150 ICD beds, the hospital is already treating more than 800 patients. Therefore, over 2000 beds in 20 medical establishments have been identified for COVID care. Covid care centres with a capacity of 600 beds, in a non-medical setting, are also on the cards.

According to health department officials, Covid patients are being categorised as mild, moderate and severe cases based on the level of treatment required . “As per this treatment protocol, mild cases will be sent to Covid-19 care centres, moderate cases to the Covid-19 health centres while hospitals can focus on severe cases,” said B Chandra Mohan, monitoring officer for Madurai.

He added that the case load is still manageable in the district with the infrastructure already in place and measures for additional care centres will be geared up as and when necessary.
