Veteran actor-politician and the chief of Makkal Neethi Maiam Kamal Haasan has urged the state government to not let the deaths of Jayaraj and Fenix, while in police custody, go unresolved.
Kamal Haasan expressed disgust over the custodial deaths and has urged the government to probe further and deliver justice to the perpetrators of the crime. He stated that the incident 'can happen to any one of us' and further termed it as unjust and 'complete violation of human rights.'
He urged that monetary relief for the victims' families is not enough and that stern action must be taken. He accused the government of not being honest about the proceedings in this issue as it had only taken action on two Sub-inspectors. He said of course the victim's family needs financial relief but TN CM should not brush aside the incident just with announcement ex gratia to the family of the deceased and uttering a customary message of condolence.
The Makkal Needhi Maiam leader also questioned the suspension of the two sub-inspectors who were involved in the custodial deaths of the innocent civilians. Haasan stated that he is suspicious that the local judiciary, doctors, and jail authorities could be involved in the case. He urged that they should be questioned and the matter should be subjected to a deep and proper probe.
He recalled the Tuticorin firing incident and lashed, “State government and chief minister, who are blindly supporting police actions, like tuticorin firing are the first accused."
"By initiating action against just two policemen, the government seems to be unwilling to act any further. People's anger against this is sure to shake this government from its seat of power," lambasted the veteran actor-politician.
