Highest ever single-day COVID death toll in TN at 68. Mammoth 3,713 positives push overall count beyond 78,000!

As the state witnessed a mammoth total of 3,713 COVID positives today, the highest ever since the onset of the pandemic in Tamil Nadu, the overall state count hotfooted to 78,335.


Chennai: As the state witnessed a mammoth total of 3,713 COVID positives today, the highest ever since the onset of the pandemic in Tamil Nadu, the overall state count hotfooted to 78,335.

Even as the virus keeps steamrollering the previous numbers, measures are being undertaken on a war footing to curb the spread. However, cause for concern is the highest ever single-day COVID death toll recorded today. The deadly virus claimed 68 more lives today (45 government and 25 private hospitals)

Out of the 3,713 people who tested positive, Chennai logged 1,939, snowballing the state capital's overall tally to 51,699. The neighbouring districts of Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur continue to turn out more positives too.

Elsewhere in the state, districts including Madurai, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Villupuram, Thiruvarur, Thoothukudi, Ranipet, Salem, Sivagangai, Nagapattinam, Krishnagiri, and Dindigul, among others, have started churning out a greater number of positives.

The Western Tamil Nadu has entered into the fray again with a significantly higher number of surges recorded over the past few days. While Coimbatore registered 33 new positives today, The Nilgiris and Tirupur recorded 10 and 9, respectively. With the overall tally for Coimbatore rising to 428, counts in Tirupur and the Nilgiris have escalated to 147 and 66, respectively.

The state managed to discharge 2,737 patients on Saturday, taking the total number of recoveries to 44,094 while the total of active cases in the state stands at 33,213.
