Coimbatore: Many celebrities across India joined the trend #JusticeForJayarajAndFenix 'on Twitter against the shocking custodial death of father-son duo in Tuticorin district.
Jayaraj (59) and his son Fenix (31) were arrested by Tuticorin police on June 19, claiming that the duo kept their mobile shops open despite COVID-19 lockdown restrictions. On June 22 and June 23, Fenix and Jayaraj passed away respectively after facing alleged brutality in police custody.
The explanation given by the police that the duo died one after the other due to health ailments failed to convince the civilians and many lawmakers.
Meanwhile, celebrities across the nation took to their social media handles and raised their voice against the alleged police brutality using the hashtag '#JusticeForJayarajandFenix' that trended on the microblogging site.
The dashing Indian opener Shikar Dhawan said he was shocked about the alleged police excesses. He tweeted, “Horrified to hear about the brutality inflicted upon Jeyaraj & Fenix in Tamil Nadu. We must raise our voice and make sure justice is given to the family.”
Meanwhile, Harbhajan Singh strongly condemned the atrocity by questioning in his tweet where is humanity? He noted that in the past people have lost their lives for various discriminations but now people have started to die for no reasons. Walking past such atrocity is inhuman!, he tweeted in Tamil.
Lawyer, politician and legislator from Vadgam, Gujarat Jignesh Mevani compared the Sathankulam deaths to George Floyd’s killing. "Dear Bollywood celebrities, have you heard what happened in Tamil Nadu or does your instagram activism only extend for other countries? The George Floyds of India are far too many. The story of such police violence & sexual abuse is just heartbreaking" he said in his lashing tweet.
Actor turned Politician, Khusbhu Sundar who is vociferous about various issues said the culprits should not get away. “Will we and can we see law taking its course and punishing the guilty without any further delay in #Jeyaraj and #Fenix case? Justice delayed is justice denied” she opined in her tweet.
Actor Jayam Ravi called it an inhuman act and demanded justice for the same. "No one is above the law, justice must be done for this inhuman act," he wrote.
