Abdul Khader from Amarjothi Garden area on Kangeyam Road in Tirupur owns a cotton godown near Kasipalayam. Knitwear waste is converted into cotton at this godown. More than 20 people are employed here.
In the evening, employees noticed smoke arising from cotton packs and tried to douse the fire. However, the fire started to spread rapidly, and the employees escaped from the place.
The fire then ate its way through to two nearby cotton godowns causing heavy flames.
On receiving information, firefighters from Tirupur North and South arrived in three fire engines and attempted to douse the fire with the help of 10 water lorries. They struggled for four hours after which the raging fire came under control.
Cotton and machinery worth lakhs were destroyed in this accident. The rural police have filed a case regarding this and are investigating. The cause of the fire is being investigated from the angle of an electrical short-circuit.
