The Madras Court has sought explanation from the State Nadu Police on its inquiry into the twin custodial deaths of the father and son, who were imprisoned after they reportedly had an altercation with the police for keeping their shop open beyond permitted hours of the current COVID curfew.
The Madurai bench of the high court, comprising Justices P.N. Prakash and B. Pugalendhi, took a very serious view of the incident on Wednesday and directed police to inform the public about the suo motu cognisance the court has taken due to the alleged police excesses. The bench said the public must be assured that the court is closely watching the issue. The bench observed, “We direct the Tirunelveli and Tuticorin district administration to keep the public informed of the fact that the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court is closely monitoring the case and thereby, instill confidence in the public,” the high court noted in its order, fixing 26 June for the next hearing."
The court has also ordered that the autopsies of the victims should be videographed.
When the case was heard, the court was informed that action had been taken against the four cops, two SI's and 2 head constables, who were allegedly involved in the custodial deaths. After hearing the presentation, the court ordered a judicial inquiry.
