Father-son duo police custody death: Shops closed in Valparai
Coimbatore: Over 1000 shops downed their shutters in Valparai to show their solidarity against the protest called for by the Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangam condemning the suspicious death of father-son duo who died during police custody at Sathankulam in Tuticorin district.
Hotels, tea shops, grocery shops and even petty shops remain closed to express their condemnation against the alleged brutality meted on the two traders who died after they were booked by police for violating lockdown norms, and lodged in Kovilpatti Prison on June 19.
Agitated trader union in Sathankulam of Tuticorin district have been staging protests accusing police excess as reason for the duo’s deaths. They had sought a thorough probe against the police personnel involved in the investigation and demanded the case to be transferred to CBI. The traders union also sought a Rs 1 crore compensation and a government job to the kin of the deceased.
As a precautionary measure, police have intensified their patrols in Valparai town.
