10,000 trees planted in #Valparai as part of World Rainforest Day

In commemoration of the World Rainforest Day today, 10,000 trees were planted near Valparai.

Coimbatore: In commemoration of the World Rainforest Day today, 10,000 trees were planted near Valparai.

Being a mountainous region, Valparai has a sprawling 225 hectares of tea plantations. With the area being dense woods over 150 years ago, wildlife was free to roam around in these regions and human-wildlife conflict was very less.

Later when tea gardens came into vogue, each estate had a small connecting area called a 'thundusolai', meaning a slice of forest. These small forests helped the wildlife eat and rest and travel to other places of the forest. However, these forests are now on the verge of extinction.

Planting more trees in these areas and improving the forests will help reduce the human wildlife-conflicts and action is being taken towards this goal.

On those lines, Valparai Nature Protection Organisation plants nearly 10,000 trees each year. In commemoration of World Rainforest Day today, the planting of trees began at the Iyerpadi area. Valparai Forest Ranger Senthil Kumar inaugurated the event.

Nature Protection Organisation executives Vidya, Ganesh and other forest department officials participated in the event.
