Coimbatore: Selvapuram police men on patrol duty were threatened by men with sickles. The men had been planning to conduct a robbery at the Ashok Nagar area.
The Selvapuram police station police were patrolling yesterday night at the Peacock Nagar area on the Ukkadam Bypass Road in Coimbatore. They spotted a group of men in the area and stopped to investigate them.
Senthil Kumar (a) Gundu Senthil (51) S/o Natarajan of M.S. Garden, Kovaipudur, Umar Farooq (31) S/o Muhammed Hussain of Fathima Nagar, Karumbukkadai and Sathakathulla (a) Shahjahan S/o Ismail, Krishnasamy Nagar, P.K. Pudur threatened the policemen with sickles and tried to escape.
Following this, the police arrested five men including the three who issued threats. The other two men were identified as Mariappan (42) S/o Ramasamy of Indra Nagar,of Madukkarai Main Road and Kabir, S/o Hussain residing on the Aathpaalam Podanur road.
During investigation, it was found that they had all met up with a plan to conduct a robbery in the Ashok Nagar area. Senthil Kumar, Umar Farooq and Sathakathulla have already been involved in criminal activities in Coimbatore city and suburban areas, Tirupur and Kerala.
Following an investigation, cases were filed against them by the Selvapuram police. They were presented before a judge and later imprisoned.
