A total 39 tonnes of cargo was sent from Coimbatore and Tirupur to UAE, Australia, Japan, New Zealand.

A total 39 tonnes of cargo was sent from Coimbatore and Tirupur to UAE, Australia, Japan, New Zealand.

After 33 tonnes of assorted cargo of vegetables, fruits, flowers and other items were flown through two SpiceJet flights to Sharjah, in the first week of May, the Coimbatore airport witnessed a lull of nearly one and a half months.

This being the case, a SpiceJet cargo plane took off from Coimbatore in the wee hours of Sunday with 16 tonnes of assorted cargo. Apart from this, 23 tonnes of textiles from Coimbatore and Tirupur were sent by road to Bengaluru airport and from there airlifted by Singapore Airlines to UAE, Australia, Japan, New Zealand and some more nations.

Sources in the airport said, "After a long gap of nearly one and a half months, we have now started to witness good response in cargo operations. We hope it will further increase in the days to come."

The sources added, " FlyDubai has again announced cargo flight operations from Coimbatore to a host of destinations. It should be noted that the airline announced commencement of its services four times in the past, but cancelled them due to poor response."

Third cargo flight was operated from Coimbatore to Sharjah on Sunday. Some special cargo flight would have been Operated from bengaluru airport to various countries, in which the cargo from Coimbatore and Tiruppur also would have been added Along with cargo from other areas. " Officials said.

The general opinion is that the State government should have a common portal in place for the interaction of traders, farmers, airline officials and cargo booking agents. This could result in an increase in the number of cargo planes to and from Coimbatore. This can go a long way in saving money that is presently spent on cargo being moved to Bengaluru and Kochi and flown from there., informed the sources.
