Chennai: The Tamil Development Department has come out with name changes for 1018 cities and areas in Tamilnadu based on the inputs from District Collectors and Tamil language experts.
Based on this, several names of the cities that have been using anglicised names or spellings have been shifted back to using spellings relevant to their Tamil names. For instance, Egmore has been changed to Ezhumboor and so on.
What’s interesting though for the denizens of Coimbatore is that this anglicised version of the name which has been in use for the last century or so, will now be renamed to Koyampuththoor. The District Collector recommendation for the same renaming is Koyamputhur. Here are the list of area and place names that are about to get changed officially to these new spellings.
