Plastic waste dumped in sewer causes blockage posing threat of infections
Coimbatore: Plastic waste dumped near Perks School in Coimbatore has blocked the sewage canal leading to an unhygienic atmosphere in the area. With the Southwest monsoon lashing in the Coimbatore district, rainwater mixed with sewage from the canal keeps flooding the roads.
This poses the risk of various infections to the public. In particular, stagnant sewage is a hotbed for mosquitoes and can become instrumental in the spread of diseases such as dengue, malaria, elephant foot and chikungunya.
The public in the area have called for immediate action from the Coimbatore Corporation to declog the canal and ban dumping of waste in the area immediately before a major health crisis occurs. In addition, the residents of the area also demanded that the sewer be cleaned at least once a week and a warning sign be erected to shoo away the people who litter.
