MP PR Natarajan condemns imposition of high electricity tariff to domestic consumers
Coimbatore: Member of Parliament PR Natarajan has condemned the imposition of additional tariffs on consumers and demanded an immediate reversal.
The curfew has been in effect nationwide since March 24 following the spread of coronavirus. Following the lockdown, the deadline for power consumers to pay bill was extended until May. Meanwhile, the TANGEDCO also announced that it would charge a monthly fee for March and April.
In January this year, the total number of e-commerce customers who had consumed around 310 units were charged Rs. 560 per month, but a customer named Padmanathan has been charged Rs. 4584 for 1240 units for the months of February, March and April. This means that the TANGEDCO is collecting Rs. 3.60 instead of Rs. 1.80 per unit. This applies to all the consumers in Tamil Nadu.
MP said, "there is no charge for consumers who use less than 100 units, according to a government statement. Similarly, the state government is charging extra for users who use more units. Accordingly, the cost per unit will vary depending on electricity usage." MP said, the TANGEDCO is calculating units for all three months together instead of a per-month basis, which increases the unit prices causing more burden to the middle class who are already suffering due to the lockdown.
He added with many businesses closed and just a few beingpartially opened, most people suffer due to the loss of income. He said, "small and medium scale enterprises are demanding exemption from electricity tariffs. In this case, the high tariff has been imposed for the public making it more difficult for people who have lost income. This is reprehensible."
MP PR Natarajan has issued a statement saying that this should be immediately rectified.
