Coimbatore: A 50-year-old woman, who was declared brain dead at a private hospital in Coimbatore on Sunday, gave a new lease of life to seven patients. The doctors successfully harvested his vitals organs which were transplanted to needy patients.

The deceased R.Shanthamani (50) survived by her sons Sathishkumar and Dhanasekar is a resident of Balamurugan Nagar, Maniyakaranpalayam, Coimbatore District. Due to high blood pressure followed by a brain haemorrhage, she got unconscious and was undergoing treatment at KMCH hospital on Avinashi Road.
As she did not respond to the treatment, the doctors declared her brain dead on Sunday. While the family members were devastated by her loss, her sons Sathishkumar and Dhanasekar came forward generously to donate their Mother's organs.
A team of multi-organ transplant Surgeons harvested her heart, lungs, liver, kidneys and eyes in accordance with the regulations prescribed by the Transplant Authority, Government of Tamil Nadu.
The harvested organs - lungs, liver and one kidney were transplanted at KMCH, while one kidney and eyes was sent to another private hospital at Coimbatore. And, the heart was sent to a private hospital at Chennai.
In honouring their gesture, Dr. Nalla G Palaniswami, Chairman, KMCH thanked the family for their thoughtful and timely decision of organ donation. He added that this act of generosity will bring in more awareness of this noble cause.
