The decision was arrived at the High Power Committee meeting held on Wednesday at Chennai. It was decided to bring the biomining project and rejuvenation of Kurichi lake under the purview of Smart City Project and funds will be alloted accordingly.
Speaking on this Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner, J. Sravan Kumar said "Biomining at Vellalore has been a long- awaited project. The aim of the project is land reclaimation and to implement the National Green Tribunal's order on Solid waste management rules on handling legacy waste. The High Power Committee meeting chaired by the Finance Secretary has approved Rs. 60.16 crores do implementing the project."
He added that the project will go for administrative sanction and later for technical sanction, both of which are expected to get a positive response.
"Biomining at Vellalore will be done through DBOT model. Once the legacy waste is cleared through segregation based on size and matter, the land will be reclaimed and residents of Vellalore can be relieved of bad odour and other related issues emanating from waste dumped there", clarified the Commissioner.
The process through which biomining will be done will be decided after floating an expression of interest and the best process would be selected, he noted.
"Since the Kuruchi lake has also been approved under "area based development", Smart City funds can be utilised for rejuvenation. Kurichi lake rejuvenation has been approved at a cost of Rs.52.15 Crore. Kurichi lake will have its bund strengthened and all the facilities that are coming up at Ukkadam Periyakulam will also be replicated at Kurichi lake, too", the Commissioner said.
"In addition, water coming through all the 15 inlets at Kurichi lake will be allowed only after cleaning", noted the Commissioner.
It may be recalled that recently, the City Corporation has taken Kuruchi lake for a lease of 99 years from PWD.
