Coimbatore: District Collector, K. Rajamani chaired a meeting here on Thursday to discuss preparedness for the upcoming local body elections in the District of Coimbatore.
The meeting was held following the recent announcement on the long-awaited elections to rural local bodies in Tamil Nadu will be held in two phases on December 27 and 30, the State Election Commission announced on Monday.
The meeting was attended by Superintendent of Police, P. Sujit Kumar, DRO Ramaduraimurugan, District Rural Development Chief Project Director Rameshkumar and Joint Registrar of Cooperative Societies Palanisamy.
"As the dates for the rural local body elections in TN have been announced, the model code of conduct has come to effect from December 2. The lection commission has announced to conduct polls in two phases. As per the announcement, elections for the local body positions of District Panchayat Ward member, Panchayat Union Council Ward member, Village Panchayat President and Village Panchayat Ward Member are to be conducted", the Collector said.
He informed that the first phase of elections for the five Panchayat Unions of Kinathukadavu, Pollachi (North), Pollachi (South) and Anaimalai are to be held on December 27. While, the second phase of elections will be held on December 30 for Panchayat Unions of Karamadai, Annur, Sarkaarsamakkulam, Periyanaickenpalayam, Sulur, Thondamuthur and Sultanpet.
The Collector instructed the election officials to ensure that each polling booth is numbered and basic amenties like water, electricity, toilet facilities are available at each booth.
"Right from the day of filing nomination to the day of elections and vote counting, proper security arrangements should be ensured by the police department. All Block development Officers should provide the police department with the polling details of their respective blocks. Importantly, additional security should be deployed at polling stations identified as 'sensitive' and 'very' sensitive", the Collector urged.
"Each polling station must be equipped with high speed internet and telecom connection. Fire engines and ambulances must be available throughout the day at all booths", he said.
And, vehicles must be arranged by the concerned officers to facilitate transport of things from the Panchayat Unions to the Polling stations and later to the vote counting locations.
