Eyes of elephant attack victim donated

Coimbatore: In a noble move, family of a farmer who was trampled to death by a wild elephant, had donated his eyes in Mettupalayam here.

The deceased, Ramasamy, was a resident of Vedar colony in Mettupalayam, where he had taken a land on lease for farming.

Ramasamy, who had planted plantain on a two acre plot used to guard his farm at night to keep wild animals away as his plot was close to the Sirumugai Reserve Forest.

On Wednesday night, a herd of elephants have entered his farm following which Ramasamy had attempted to chase them using his torch light. However, his attempt had triggered an immediate response from an elephant, which had chased him and attacked him.

Ramasamy was trampled by an elephant which had thrown him into a well and he succumbed to injuries on the spot. His mortal remains were spotted by a neighbour who informed the foresters. His mortal remains were retrieved from the well by foresters who sent it to the Mettupalayam Government Hospital for autopsy.

Meanwhile, Haripriya the daughter of Ramasamy and Jamuna, his wife had come forward to donate his eyes for the blind.

His family was offered an immediate solatium of Rs. 25,000 for funeral rituals by the forest department.
