The Nilgiris: In an incident that occurred on the early hours of Wednesday at Kunil field near Gudalur, a cow was mauled to death by a tiger. Following which, the villagers have urged the forest department to widen the trenches alinf the forest boundaries and provide fair compensation.

According to reports, the cow was tied to a pole in a farnland at Kunilvayal village near Gudalur. At 1 am on Wednesday, the cattle owner heard unusual sound from the cow shed and peeped out and saw a tiger mauling on one his cow. As he shouted for help, the villagers gathered together and chased the tiger off from the farmland.
It is reported that a little later the tiger came back and attempted ro drag the corpse, but the villagers chased it back into deep forests.
Riled up over the incident, the villagers have demanded the forest officials to take preventive measures to stop wild animals entering into the villages.
"As the village is close to Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, wild animals often intrude into nearby villages. After a series of protests, the Forest department had set a permanent camp to monitor wildlife movement in our area. However, the trenches set along the boundaries of the forests have narrowed down, thus allowing elephants and tigers walk into adjoining villages", they alleged.
The residents of Kunilvayal, Vadavayal, Echamvayal, Putur Vayal, Thorapalli and Molapalli areas in Gudalur have jointly urged the forest department to properly maintain the trenches.
They further stressed on timely and fair compensation, as cattle rearing is their only livelihood. They opined that compensation in Tamil Nadu is very less when compared to other States. Hence, they demanded to increase the compensation at par with other States.
