16 out of 100 marriages in Tamil Nadu are child marriages; Coimbatore records 19.9% - UNICEF

Coimbatore: Child marriage is widespread across India, with nearly half of brides married as girls. While there has been a decline in the incidence of child marriage nationally (from 54 per cent in 1992-93 to 27 per cent in 2016) and in nearly all states, the pace of change remains slow, especially for girls in the age group 15-18 years, according to UNICEF.

Coimbatore: Child marriage is widespread across India, with nearly half of brides married as girls. While there has been a decline in the incidence of child marriage nationally (from 54 per cent in 1992-93 to 27 per cent in 2016) and in nearly all states, the pace of change remains slow, especially for girls in the age group 15-18 years, according to UNICEF. 

Though with the passage of time child marriages have minimised, but still, it is a bane in many parts of India, especially rural areas. 



In a press conference on child marriage and child protection held here, UNICEF representatives said that while 16 out of 100 marriages in Tamil Nadu are child marriages, 19.9 percent happens in Coimbatore district.

The event was held in collaboration with UNICEF and Coimbatore Press Club. Journalists were briefed on how to access, document, comply and execute news reports related to child marriages.



UNICEF said that 16 out of 100 marriages in Tamil Nadu are child marriages, amongst which 19.9 per cent happens in Coimbatore district. They apprised that Coimbatore is one of the seven districts in Tamil Nadu where highest number of child marriages still prevails. 

The representatives from UNICEF said that they are working with social organisations to bring down child marriages across the nation. 



The concept of child marriage has been prohibited by the Indian Constitution through various laws and enactments. Child Marriage Restraint Act of 1929 was the first law passed in India against child marriage and later it was amended as Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006.
