MTP tragedy: CM visits families; announces Rs.10 lakhs compensation and legal action on house owner

Coimbatore: Chief Minister Edapadi K Palanisamy visited Nadur area in Mettupalayam on Tuesday where 17 people died after compound wall of a house collapsed on four houses. He consoled the family members and assured necessary legal action on the house owner.

Addressing the media, the CM expressed shock and grief over the unexpected tragedy and said that legal action will be initiated against Suvasubramaniam, the house owner whose compound wall had caused the disaster. 



He announced that a total of Rs. 10 lakhs for each victim Rs. 4 lakhs from State disaster relief find and Rs. 6 lakhs from CM relief fund will be distributed for the families of the victims. He also assured that jobs will be provided to the family members of the deceased. 



"While visiting the area along with Deputy CM and Minister SP Velumani, we found that many houses were in a dilapidated state. Hence, arrangements will be made to provide safe housing for people living in such houses. And, alternate housing will be built for the families of the deceased", the CM said. 

When questioned on the allegations claiming the wall to be an 'Untouchability' wall, the CM said appropriate legal action based on the investigation will be taken. 

He also apprised that 300 houses lying along the banks of Bhavani river were provided with alternate housing. He said that his government is planning towards more preparedness and identifying houses prone to collapsing during incessant rains to prevent such calamities.

"The tragedy should not be politicised", the CM said.
