17 dead in MTP: Rs.25 lakhs compensation, Govt job and new houses demand family of the deceased; 25 people arrested

Coimbatore: More than 100 people mostly relatives and family members of the 17 people who died in Mettupalayam (MTP) house collapse incident, were arrested for protesting to garner the attention of the government to fulfil their demands.


Coimbatore: More than 100 people mostly relatives and family members of the 17 people who died in Mettupalayam (MTP) house collapse incident, were arrested for protesting to garner the attention of the government to fulfil their demands. 



Tamil Puligal Party President, Naagai Thiruvalluvan, Dravidar Tamilar Katchi President Venmani, Jathi Olippu Viduthalai Munnani, President Harimannan and 25 other members who led the protest were courted arrest. 

All the arrested were booked for illegal gathering, intimidation of civil servants, threat murder and others. They were produced in Court and remanded. 

Following their arrest, more people gathered and staged a protest condemning the police for assaulting party and caste-based organisation heads. 



Similar protests were staged here in Coimbatore near Thiruvalluvar bus stand, on behalf of many political parties and caste-based groups including DMK, VCK, May 17 Iyakkam, Theendaamai Ozhippu Munnani and many other groups took part in the protests which was led by TPDK General Secretary K. Ramakrishnan.



The infuriated protesters slammed that the wall that killed 17 people was an 'untouchability wall' and inaction of the authorities, to the complaints raised against the wall in the past had now claimed 17 innocent lives. 

They demanded a compensation of Rs. 25 lakhs for the deceased people's family, government job for a member of the family and new houses to be built for them. 



More than 100 protestors were arrested during these protests, by the police.

Tense situation prevails in Mettupalayam due to the protests. Additional police have been deployed to maintain law and order.
