Coimbatore: MP Jothimani in the Parliament today highlighted on the increasing sexual assaults on women in Tamil Nadu and urged that such cases should be go for trial in the Fast Track Court (FTC).

Fast track courts (FTCs) are special courts for speedy trials and make the judiciary more effective.

From Pollachi issue to the latest rape case in Coimbatore where a 17-year-old student was sexually assaulted, the MP urged the Parliament to implement Fast Track Courts for speedy justice.

"Hundreds of women were sexually abused and videographed in Pollachi. Allegations are rife that a State Minister's son and his friends were involved in the case. The case which shook the nation has been dealt in a fast track court and justice should be served immediately", she urged.

She alleged that the Police purposefully released the name of the complainant to indirectly threaten the other victims from coming forward to complaint. While there is a provision in the law to trial such cases in FTC, the option has not be implemented, the MP alleged.

The CBI began the probe in that case at the request of the Tamil Nadu government on March 12. The gang is believed to have harassed and blackmailed a large number of women.

Keeping in mind the seriousness of the problem, she demanded specialised investigation with technical expertise and the government had given its consent to transfer harassment related cases from the CB-CID to the CBI.

Earlier, the Ministry for Women and Child Development proposed to the government to set up 1,023 FTCs to clear the cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

And, the Apex Court in a suo motu petition had issued directions, stating that districts with more than 100 cases pending under the POCSO Act need to set up special courts that can deal specifically with these cases.
