17 killed as houses collapse due to heavy downpour in Mettupalayam

Coimbatore: At least 17 people, including children and women, were killed after a 10-foot compound wall of a house collapsed on four other houses at AT Colony in Mettupalayam.


Coimbatore: At least 17 people, including children and women, were killed after a 10-foot compound wall of a house collapsed on four other houses at AT Colony in Mettupalayam.

The overnight heavy downpours in Mettupalayam and adjacent areas led to inundation throughout the area and all over bridges overflowing in flash floods. 



On the wee hours of Monday, the compound wall of a house collapsed at AT Colony in Mettupalayam collapsed and fell on four other houses nearby killing at least 17 people. 

According to initial reports, houses of four people including Arukkani, Chinnammal were close to a duplex house in AT Colony Mettupalayam. In this scenario, due to the heavy rains overnight the 10-foot compound wall around the house collapsed and fell on the four houses.

17 people including women and children were stuck inside the debris. 



Upon information, firefighters and police reached the spot and used JCBs to clear the debris and retrieved the bodies.



The others who were trapped in the wreckage for more than 2 hours were rescued and sent to Mettupalayam Government Hospital for treatment. 



Mettupalayam MLA and Thasildar are supervising the rescue work. 

The public have urged to take appropriate action against the owner of the house which caused the accident.
